The following is a post taken from Laura Parker’s blog, Cereal for Dinner. Here she explains their recent decision to move to Thailand.

“I have two daughters. I would do anything to protect them, anything. And I can’t imagine being powerless to do that, as a father. And I would just hope that if there was another man who could help them, I would hope and pray that he would come.”

–My husband Matt in a meeting this week

The above is a picture of the path our family will be walking, literally, within the next year. This trail through a rice field leads to an orphanage for young girls who would be targeted for the sex industry in Thailand. These precious girls will become frirends with our three young children, as our family moves virtually halfway around the world to love and to serve, to lead and to learn. Here is our story.

Seeds Planted. As most of you know, my husband Matt has been in student ministry at a church in Colorado (Woodland Park Community Church) for four years now. As anyone that knows him can attest, he is a passionate and Christ-following leader, and in the past year and a half, his heart has been stirred on behalf of the impoverished in our world. He has been reading books, looking at the the Bible, and praying and a consistent theme has arisen– God wants us to fight on behalf of the poor, wants us to love orphans, and desires us to be instruments of compassion and justice in the world.

A Random Surprise. While the seeds of these passions were being planted, Matt received an incredible gift. Several of his former students were traveling around the world after highschool graduation (better known as the V-Team), and the parents of these three young men wanted to fly Matt out to surprise them for two weeks. The destination was Thailand. (You can see his surprise video HERE . You can also see pictures from the trip HERE and a video from the V-Team HERE. )

Thailand is a Buddhist country, where impoverished children and women are often sold into prostitution and where many refugees from countries like Myanmar seek a home. And though there is much spiritual darkness there, it is a land of exotic beauty, lovely people and rich foods. It was not surprising that Matt loved it when he first visited . . . and the seeds of compassion that were now growing in my husband’s heart began to find roots in a certain land.

It’s a Small World. After Matt got back in February of this year (2009), he continued to wrestle with God’s heart for the globe and for the poor. He wrestled with what it looked like for him as an individual and for us as a family. Several months later, after continued emails with a pastor in Thailand whom they visited, Matt had a meeting with a gentleman in Colorado Springs. This man is a lawyer for the Navigators (a Christian organization) and had founded an orphanage in Chiang Mai, Thailand called Breanna’s House of Joy. Over several lunches, Matt learned that the orphanage houses about 50 girls who would be targeted for the sex industry in Thailand. He also learned that the orphanage was in need of a secondary source of income to help support its costs, and that they needed a trade skill program and transitional housing to be developed for the girls after they graduated. The pieces were beginning to fit together; the arrows started pointing in the same direction–overseas to an orphanage in a jungle. Eventually, Matt was offered a position co-directing the nonprofit foundation, Joy to the World Outreach, which oversees the orphanage and was invited for a visit this past October, 2009.

Evidence Stacking Up. And, once again, he loved this Asian country. He spent time visiting the orphanage and playing with the girls there. He and a friend explored the city on mopeds, Asian-style, and he evaluated what it would look like for our family of five to move and live there. His heart continued to be pulled in Thailand’s direction when he learned that we would have the freedom to host teams, particularly teams of college-aged students for mentorship purposes. As some of you know, that has always been a longing in both of us–to use the “classroom” of overseas living and ministry as a tool to teach young people about themselves and about being Jesus’ hands and feet in the world. The evidence for a move overseas was quickly stacking up.

The Final Arrow. When he got home just two weeks ago, despite the circumstances seeming to point in the direction of Thailand, he was still wrestling. A declaration of an international move with three kids ages 6 and under and a resignation of an excellent job in ministry with people he loves in a place we all adore, was not something to be made flippantly. He knew that. We both knew that. And then one day while he was praying and seeking God’s heart for our family, he found a new peace with this road into the jungle. He wrote and asked God to show Him in the Scriptures where he had been already reading a confirmation of this move to Thailand. As the Divine would have it, the next chapter he was on in his daily study was Luke, Chapter 5. It is the story of when Jesus tells Peter to cast his fishing nets out into “deep waters”– even though the fishermen had fished all night without success, even though deeper, colder waters were uncomfortable for fish, even though fishing at midday was illogical. And, yet, and you may know the story, Peter and his friends pull in so many fish that it takes two boats to get them all to shore. And Jesus says to follow Him. And they drop their nets and leave the dock by the sea for the dusty road behind this Jesus of Nazareth. And so, the final arrow pointing to Thailand was suddenly lit up in bright neon lights for him, and, thus, for us as a family. And just like Peter, our currently-full nets have been dropped from our hands, and we are following what God has been stirring for well over a year.

The Plan. Our goal is to move to Thailand by May of 2010. Matt will be working at the church for a few more months, organizing and making plans for his leaving to be as easy as possible. We will also be raising support over the next several months. The position co-directing the orphanage is not a paid one, so we will need to raise our own funds to be able to go. Hopefully, a secondary source of income for our family will be the hosting of short-term adult teams as well as running the mentorship program for college-aged students. Initially our main tasks in Thailand will be developing a secondary income stream for the orphanage itself (first project up is creating a fishpond for a food and income source), maintaining the grounds, developing a trade skill and transitional housing for the older girls, and possibly teaching English classes. The girls are cared for practically (meals, laundry, etc.) by an excellent Thai staff, and they are lead spiritually by a Burmese pastor and his wife who currently direct the orphanage (and will continue to do so).

A BitterSweet Busy. The sadness of leaving Woodland Park and the United States, of the goodbyes to family and friends, is not something we look forward to at all. And yet, in the same breath, we are both so excited and hopeful for what we are going to learn about God Himself, ourselves, and the world in the process of this move. We are excited to have our kids walking in a different culture, and are hopeful for how this experience will enlarge their hearts for others less fortunate. We will also be busy over the next months developing a website for the ministry, raising funds, and trudging through the details of moving.

And the country of Thailand cries out for that Love loudly, very loudly. Thailand is a Buddhist country, with over 95% of its population praying at temples and lighting candles to golden statues. The sex industry has a firm and ugly grip on the nation, where there are literally millions involved in prostitution. Some sources claim that the sex industry brings in up to 14% of the entire GNP for the country, and it is fed by both the locals and the host of tourists who frequent the country for its gorgeous beaches, exotic beauty, and inexpensive accommodations. The truly tragic statistic about Thailand’s sex industry is that 35% of those involved are children, under the age of 18. Statistically speaking, 1 in every 3 prostitutes is a child. Typically, these children are either sold by their families because of extreme poverty or because of a lack of understanding about what they are being taken to do. Unfortunately, human trafficking in this part of the world is rampant.

In addition to the grip of Buddhism and the sex industry, Thailand is a country to which refugees flee. Neighboring it to the West is the country of Myanmar, where Burmese people are being persecuted unjustly and horrifically. These refugees seek a new home in Thailand, but are often faced with extreme poverty, racial discrimination, and the dangers of human trafficking.

Thailand is much more than an exotic vacation spot. Beneath the white sand beaches, the tropical fruit, and the lovely people, a country’s heart cries out for justice for its women, protection for its children, and hope for its people.

What Now? You graduate high school or college and need direction, you drop out of university because it wasn’t what you thought, or you are faced with a thousand different roads and don’t know which one to travel. And you have a heart to follow God’s best for your life, but you just can’t figure out what that is. And deep in your soul there’s a craving to hit the “pause” button on life’s fast-track to the future, and you want time to evaluate, to experience, to grow, to travel. Before you step into a four-year college or a lifetime career, you want to see more of God’s world, want to get more comfortable in your own skin, and want to drink of God Himself more deeply than you’ve tasted so far. If any of these longings connect with you, if you are between the ages of 18 – 24, if you are committed Christian and want to be the hands and feet of Jesus in Thailand, consider spending a few months as a Destined Traveler.

Why Mentorship? Jesus Himself told his followers to make disciples– to lead others in living and thinking like Christ. If we look at the life of Jesus, we can see how He chose to do just that– He gathered a small group of willing hearts around him. These twelve disciples did life with Jesus. They ate with him, they slept beside him, they watched him handle intense situations and broken people. They saw how He loved others and got to listen to His explanations of hard teachings. They were on the inner circle in His earthly ministry and had a box-seat to the miraculous.

Obviously, we at Destined Traveler are by no means claiming to be the spittin’ image of Jesus Himself, but we do see the value of allowing a young adult to walk closely alongside an older Christian in ministry and in life. We also recognize the power of a small group of individuals who are all pursuing the same spiritual goals and the dynamic energy that a group like that can create. With over 12 years of experience in ministry, both in the United States and in other countries, we recognize that the classroom of another culture can oftentimes be one of the most powerful for spiritual transformation. When young people get out of their comfort zones, they are challenged to grow in their faith in ways that are difficult to experience within the borders of normal life. Students will be given the space to study God’s word, practice the spiritual disciplines (meditation, prayer, silence, etc.), engage in various outlets of Christian service and ministry, learn from sound Biblical teaching, enjoy one-on-one discipleship with an older Christian, taste true community within the team, observe what normal life is like for a Jesus-loving missionary family, practice loving and living in a foreign culture, evaluate their God-given gifts and their God-directed futures, and get a bigger glimpse of God’s heart for the world.

The Details? The mentorship program will begin (hopefully) in September of 2010. We will host teams of no more than 12 young people, ages 18-24. The Fall program will begin in September and finish at the end of November. Students will have a required reading list to prepare for the trip, as well as an intensive interview process before acceptance into the program. If you are interested or would like more information, contact Matt Parker (co-director, Joy to the World Foundation, Thailand) at coloradoparkers@gmail.com.

Imagine your 10 year-old nephew, your own daughter, or the first graders at your local school.

Imagine. Now imagine those same defenseless children being sold into prostitution because of extreme poverty or because of deception. In the country of Thailand, as in much of Southeast Asia, the sex industry is a driving economic force. Sadly, current statistics report that up to 35% of those involved in this industry are under the age of 18. And while the statistics are incomprehensible, don’t just think of the facts. Place that child you know in the same position thousands of children find themselves in in quieter corners of the globe. When you picture your own son who plays soccer or your neighbor’s little girl who sells you cookies every year, suddenly a foggy fact becomes a sickening reality.

Rescuing Them. It has been found that one of the best ways to combat child prostitution in countries like Thailand is to fight it pre-emptively. Once a child gets sold into the sex industry, it is very difficult for them to be rescued from that situation. However, there has been great success in identifying girls who would become likely targets for human trafficking and rescuing them from their poverty before the industry captures them. This is the goal and strategy of Breanna’s House of Joy, which currently is a place of refuge for almost 50 impoverished girls from the hill tribes of Thailand.

James tells us in the first chapter of his book in the Bible, “Pure and undefiled religion is this: to care for the orphan and the widow, and to remain uncorrupted by this world.” Time and time again in the Bible, we are admonished to look out for the weak, to care for the poor, to love the needy, to fight for the defenseless, and to give homes to the orphans. This sanctuary in a Thai jungle serves as a conduit to do just that.

Breanna’s House of Joy was established four years ago about 10 minutes outside of the second largest city in Thailand, Chiang Mai. It’s blue-roof peeks over jungle and rice fields and house nearly 50 girls. These young girls find refuge at this orphanage because they have been identified as girls that are at great risk for human trafficking into the Thailand’s rampant sex industry. These girls either have no parents, are unwanted by their families, or come from extreme poverty. They receive a quality education, safe housing, and teaching about Jesus and His wild love for each of them.

In the Heart of a Child. Breanna’s House is a picture of the beauty arising from the ashes. Several years ago, literally halfway around the worldfrom the Thai jungle in the mountains of the USA, a twelve-year-old girl was killed tragically in a car accident. This young girl, Breanna, had a tender heart for Asian orphans, and her parents founded Breanna’s House of Joy in her honor. Today, nearly 50 dark-skinned girls giggle and play under a plaque that bears Breanna’s name and smile.

The Plaque Remembering Breanna at the Orphanage

L - R: Betty (Lu's wife), Ryan (supporter from the States), Matt (future co-director), Pastor Lu (current director)

Details. Currently, the girls are cared for practically by five nationals. These adults are Christians who serve with humility and love the girls greatly. The direction for the orphanage on site will be overseen by Pastor Lu, a Burmese pastor actively involved in working with the refugees in Myanmar, and Matt Parker, an American moving to Thailand in 2010 with his family. There is a guest house on site which can sleep up to 15 individuals, and the orphanage itself is nestled in the jungle about 20 minutes outside of the bustling city of Chiang Mai.

The Future. We have several projects on hand for Breanna’s House of Joy. We would like to develop a trade skill for the girls, so that they can each be equipped with the necessary tools to successfully break the cycle of poverty. Transitional housing also needs to be developed as a way to integrate the girls safely into their own culture after they graduate from the orphanage at 18. Another task at hand is the development of a secondary and sustainable source of incomefor the orphanage. In order to maintain and grow, Breanna’s House needs more than just the donations of generous people. The first project up will be the creation of a fish pond on the existing property, which will serve as both a food and an income source. As always, the grounds need to be maintained and improved. And, of course, the girls need to be loved and encouraged.
